Genuine Southern hospitality awaits this holiday season at the beautiful Merry Sherwood Plantation in Berlin
Within three hours of Washington D.C., Baltimore and Philadelphia is an opportunity to step back in time. From the moment you enter the grounds through the handsomely detailed gates of Merry Sherwood plantation in Berlin, you will feel grandeur and majesty of this antebellum mansion. In the magnificent entry hall you will begin to appreciate the meticulous detail that went into building the plantation-style home.
On the north side is an expansive and elegant ballroom with twin marble fireplaces, exquisite peer mirrors, a square grand piano, authentic Victorian furniture and pieces of fine art. The décor evokes a sense of splendor and reverie for a bygone time.
On the south side is a charming parlor filled with lush Victorian color, while just beyond waits an elegant dining room with hand-craved sideboards, rosewood dining chairs and a grand chandelier. A short step away is the original plantation office/library, with rare books and hidden cupboards. The adjacent sun porch, meanwhile, with its cushy cane furniture, invites you to sit a spell and relax.
When its time to head up the mahogany-bannistered stairway from the entry hall, you will see eight unusually large bedrooms, each with differently styled Victorian antiques and oceans of creamy marble to complete the effect.
From the panoramic view of the wraparound veranda, you observe a wide variety of trees and shrubs, some rare to the area. The tailored gardens and manicured landscaping that showcase the 18-acre tract offer a feeling of tranquility that echoes from a time more than 130 years in the past.
The future of Merry Sherwood, however, rests in the capable hands of the plantation’s new innkeepers, Richard and Alfreda Warren of Virginia, who took over the care of the estate in May. Having run a catering business in Richmond for 10 years, the Warrens are a family known to love entertaining friends and family, making them extremely well suited to their current post.
“We’re expanding the offerings on the breakfast menu, which will change daily for the overnight guests,” said Richard. “Also there will be attractive packages for all holidays, anniversaries and birthdays available in 2012, which is going to be a very good year for the inn.”
Throughout the month of December, the ethereal estate will be decorated for the holidays in authentic Victorian themes. On December 15 there will be an open house from 4-8 pm for the public to visit, enjoy refreshments and celebrate the holiday season with the Warrens and Merry Sherwood in an unmatched setting of true Southern hospitality.
The Warrens graciously invite the community to behold for themselves the timeless grandeur of Merry Sherwood Plantation, which is also available as an event venue for everything from weddings to business meetings.
