The Broadway hit “Dreamgirls” visits Salisbury for one show
As part of their ongoing “Broadway in Salisbury” campaign, the Wicomico Youth & Civic Center is proud to offer a glittering piece of the world-famous district on May 30 with a performance of the Tony Award-winning Dreamgirls. This smash-hit musical tells the story of a fictional 1960’s girl group called The Dreams, which is based, albeit loosely, on the story of Motown sensation Diana Ross and the Supremes. Depicting the highs and lows along the road to success in the music industry, Dreamgirls is as electric with energy as it is chock-full of award-winning music and fantastic singing.
Having premiered on Broadway in 1981, Dreamgirls won six Tony Awards and two Grammys, for hits like “And I Am Telling You I’m Not Going,” originally performed by Jennifer Holliday. Adapted for the big screen in 2006, the film starred Beyoncé, Jamie Foxx, Eddie Murphy and Jennifer Hudson, who nabbed the Best Supporting Actress Oscar for her portrayal of Effie White.
Dreamgirls is being brought to Salisbury by Big League Productions, Inc., which has promised to stage a “high-tech production” of the show, including a prominent multimedia video design. It is directed and choreographed by Broadway veteran Bobby Longbottom, with choreographic assistance from Shane Sparks of the hit show So You Think You Can Dance. -KM
The presentation of Dreamgirls is a one-performance-only show. Tickets are on sale now and available at the box office of the civic center or by phone, at 410-548-4911. Visit them online at www.WicomicoCivicCenter.org.
