Vintage vehicles take to the streets of historic Lewes

Historic downtown will be the setting for the 18th annual Lewes British Motorcar Show on Saturday May 4, sponsored by the Lewes Chamber of Commerce. Held in the Lewes Historical Society Complex on 110 Shipcarpenter St., the show will last from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. and feature classic British car models in coalition with the British Car Club of Delaware.

This year, the show’s marque, or featured car, is the Lotus Seven, a lightweight two-seater open-top sports car that had been highly successful in both sales and as an archetype for numerous imitations. During the show, while browsing through cars, you can enjoy the society’s concession stand, “Hiram’s Pub,” which will be serving traditional English
cuisine, beer, teas and soft drinks. Hiram’s Pub will be run by a local landmark, the Rose & Crown Restaurant, which is located on Second St. The show will end with a “Winner’s Circle” parade, also on Second St.

The car show is all part of Lewes’ Fun Friday Fiesta. The day will start with the car show, then continue on to the
Merchant’s Spring Sidewalk Sale, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the commercial district around Second St., and will conclude with a Cinco de Mayo-and-May Day-themed celebration at 5 p.m. on Market St. So, even if cars aren’t really your thing, this is sure to be a fun day, all spent surrounded by the museums, houses and landscapes of historic downtown Lewes.

Admission to the car show is $3 for adults and free for kids under 12. Admission includes access to the cars as well as the Lewes Historical Society’s commemorated buildings.
