From the luxurious Gateway Grand Residences to the Bay Colony community clubhouse and the West Harbor Village models, Johnny Janosik’s talented design department produces amazing results
The Gateway Grand Residences in Ocean City is widely regarded as one of the premier locations on the Eastern Shore. With units featuring gourmet kitchens, luxurious marble baths and soaring ceilings, not to mention its oceanfront views that stretch for miles, it’s not surprising that the development is nearly sold out.
A strong component of The Gateway Grand’s success is its association with Johnny Janosik and its director of design services, Jamelle Showell, whose interior-decorating vision and talent has transformed multiple barren units into breathtaking models.
“Jamelle always brings a beach-chic design concept to our models,” said Jon Barker, sales manager at The Gateway Grand. “The spaces are bright and airy, and she incorporates unique pieces that tie together to the entire space and make people feel truly comfortable at the beach.”
Developer Marie Karl of Trammel and Crow has very specific goals for each model at the property, according to Showell, who discusses initial concepts with Barker and Realtor Grant Fritschle before sending a detailed design board to Washington, D.C., for Karl’s review. “The commonality for each model is elegance but also sustainability in the fabric and finishes,” said Jamelle, who has 25 years’ experience in the industry.
“Working with Johnny Janosik and Jamelle personally has been a fantastic experience,” Barker added. “She’s extremely professional, always on time, and her design plans are spectacular. Our clientele typically purchase units near the beach season, and Jamelle’s fully furnished models have definitely enhanced their buying experiences and played roles in closing sales. I know that our residents have gone back to Johnny Janosik to continue to shop and that Jamelle has also worked with them to redesign and decorate their primary residences off the Shore.
“What we also like about Johnny Janosik is that they have everything imaginable under one roof,” Barker continued. “If we want to add a gaming table to a model, they have it. If we need to furnish one of our large terraces, they have great outdoor-furniture selections. Our needs are typically met within 48 hours, too. It’s not a drawn-out process.”
During a renovation of the Bay Colony community clubhouse in Dagsboro, homeowners’ association president John Sullivan was referred to Johnny Janosik and shared similar sentiments about partnering with Showell and her team.
“Working with Johnny Janosik, and Jamelle in particular, was an incredible experience,” Sullivan said. “She went beyond assisting us with furniture selections and helped bring just the right colors and styles, and even carpet, into the design. Everyone was incredibly professional, and the results were superb. The project was completed a year ago, and we still receive positive comments from our residents every single week.”
Because Bay Colony’s residents use the facility quite often, Showell knew she needed to incorporate furnishings that would withstand the test of time — and considerable use.
“We chose a beautiful furniture line that’s constructed of a special material called polywood that looks like it’s made with an elegant wood finish,” Jamelle said. “It will hold up to card games, hot food and cold drinks and many other circumstances that could ruin an ordinary surface.”
At West Harbor Village, a collection of new single-family homes and townhomes in West Ocean City, developers chose Johnny Janosik to decorate their models using a colorful and modern design palette with broad appeal.
“The West Harbor Village homes project required us to create a design that would appeal to first and second homebuyers,” Showell said. “The townhouses have wonderful floor plans that are very roomy and don’t feel like a traditional, narrow townhome, so we wanted to add to that spaciousness with our furnishings.”
Jamelle teams with design coordinator Jessica Hartman, an Art Institute of Philadelphia graduate with seven years of experience, and the results are met with rave reviews from the developers.
“Our design plans meet the needs of each business,” Showell said. “Each is unique, and we gear our program to achieve their goals. We work with a diverse group of businesses, including residential developers, hotels, community associations, and many others, to create indoor and outdoor spaces.”
Since opening in 1953, Johnny Janosik has grown to be the largest independent retailer in the region and one of the top-100 furniture stores in the country. Their evolution continues this spring, with the grand opening of their new, ultra-modern showroom in Dover. Deanie Gory will direct that location’s in-home design department, while in Laurel, designers Carolyn Lauman and Chris Diamond assist customers daily with their interior decorating talents.
