Wes Novelli and Hardscapes, Inc. bring paradise to properties in OC and Salisbury
Although separated by just 35 miles, it’s been said that Salisbury and Ocean City are worlds apart based on the atmospheres of the neighboring municipalities. Wes Novelli, owner of Hardscapes, Inc., did his part recently to bridge this gap by designing tropical backyard retreats for clients in each location.
At the beach, Novelli created the ideal weekend getaway for Alexandria, Va. executives Jay and Nahid Wingfield. Jay, an attorney, and Nahid, a spa-and-hair-salon owner, escape the Beltway’s hustle and bustle to Ocean City and their Marlin Drive vacation home each weekend from June to September. Once there, they shed their traditional condominium lifestyle and spend as much time as possible relaxing in their stunning backyard on Assawoman Bay.
“We’re out there a lot,” said Jay, who stated he and Nahid were referred to Hardscapes, Inc. by their pool contractor, Jul Airey of Poolside Construction, after a series of contractors were unable to incorporate his wife’s vision into their backyard. “Now that the project is complete, it makes my wife very happy — and if she’s happy, then I’m happy. We are very pleased with it and truly enjoy our time there.”
The Wingfields frequently entertain outside, and why shouldn’t they, in a setting that features an outdoor kitchen, swimming pool, firepit, gazebo and view that all remind Nahid of her Peruvian roots. Wes enhanced the feel of the space by incorporating an abundant amount of natural coral. Imported from Florida, the strategic use of the rock adds to the tropical sensation throughout the space.
“Wes came up with the coral concept, and we fell in love with it,” Jay said.
In addition to the French-patterned Marmiro Stone hardscaping (more to come on that), the firepit and outdoor-kitchen stone veneer, Novelli designed and installed steps and landings in the backyard, along with a new driveway that features an accent wall in the horseshoe area of the space.
Lifelong Salisbury residents Jenna and Corey Hoch knew they wanted a soothing oasis in their backyard, too. The proud parents of Laney, 5, and Keller, 2 ½, and the owners of Companion Home Care, the couple look forward to the warmer months, when they can enjoy their Key West-like atmosphere, handsomely appointed with a swimming pool, tanning area and play area for the kids.
“Wes was recommended to us by Trond’s Pool Care. They said he would create a design that would fit our style, and they were right,” Jenna said. “We wanted something resort-like — a Palm Beach-meets-Napa feel. It had to be soothing but stylish. And it’s just that!”
An 8-inch synthetic turf border between the bluestone copping and the pool deck pavers provides an attractive aesthetic accent and a useful, albeit fortuitous, purpose.
“We knew we wanted that to break up the patio look,” Jenna said. “In a perfect world, it would be real grass, but this is awesome, and it acts as a barrier that prevents debris from getting in the pool.”
Wes also incorporated Marmiro Stone at the Hoch residence, but this time laid the marble pavers in an attractive running bond pattern. Beyond its Caribbean appearance, the stones are practical in the staunch summer heat and are designed to remain cool to the touch even in temperatures that reach the mid-90s.
“This stone also comes with a lifetime warranty on damage related to freezing and thawing,” Novelli said, “which is a substantial benefit because the Eastern Shore of Maryland, Delaware and Virginia has the most rapid freeze/thaw cycles to be found anywhere in the world.”
The Hochs are currently in the process of planning the addition of a pavilion and firepit with Wes, bringing paradise that much closer to their back door.
