SALISBURY CHIC

Column: FACES
Nancy N Boutique owner Nancy Nyquist
Salisbury is not necessarily known for its ocean of haute couture or plethora of chic boutiques, whichis one reason Nancy N Boutique caters to women of discriminating fashion tastes from across the Eastern Shore and beyond. But that’s not the only reason Nancy Nyquist’s business is unique in the area.

From the moment you enter her impeccably appointed space, you are wafted by a veritable cornucopia of pleasant scents, including soothing lotions, room diffusers and aromatic sprays by Thymes. Just as the redolent ambiance washes over you, you are greeted either by a member of her friendly sales staff or by Nancy herself, all of whom are at your disposal.

Nyquist opened her store in 1983 with a firmly held philosophy in mind: It was her goal to have every customer who walked into her boutique leave looking her absolute best while saving that customer time and money, as well. That successful formula helps account for the fact that after 28 years of operation, Nyquist’s business is still growing.

“We now have more space and are going to be showcasing more locally created and made pieces,” said Nyquist. “On the walls you will find unique black-and-white photos shot and framed by Rita, while Bryan has contributed some unusually beautiful hand-fired glass pendants and earrings. We’ll also be showing some lovely polished-stone necklaces with matching earrings by Donna.”

A portion of that increased show space will be devoted to her newly enhanced line of designer clothing. In addition to Nancy’s heralded line of exquisite Eileen Fisher designs — which enjoyed a tremendous response during her exclusive trunk show this past November — she has brought the trendy-hot and equally sexy Tribal sportswear line into the fold.

Joining them are designs by Trina Turk, whose bold, figure-flattering tops and party-ready all-sequins skirts establish her as a designer who knows how to put a lively spin on classic style.
Finally, bringing in da funk (if not necessarily da noise) is none other than 600 West, whose intricate details over traditional themes really garner more than their share of attention.

“Good clothing is not necessarily inexpensive, so it should be treated as an investment,” Nancy advised. “It should also be easy to care for and sufficiently classic in style that four or more years later, it can still look good and be fashionable.”

As one of the many perks of shopping there, Nancy N offers free alterations because, as Nancy put it, she doesn’t believe in off-the-rack looks when it comes to her customers. The boutique also holds weekly sales on select merchandise, so Nancy recommends checking in with the store often to see if that special item you’ve had your eye on has gone on sale.
