BACKYARD HARMONY

Column: FACES
Wes Novelli of Hardscapes, Inc.
There are those who would tell you that Wes Novelli of Hardscapes, Inc. is the ideal blend of seasoned experience and youthful enthusiasm. Thus, he’s earned a reputation for
approaching each new job as if it were his first while executing all with virtual perfection.

“My thing is all about avoiding a formula or cookie-cutter approach to my jobs,” said Novelli, who recently celebrated his 10th year in business on the Eastern Shore. “I like to keep each new project real and fresh, making sure at the same time that each has its own unique
character. I’d really prefer to never repeat myself on any job, unless a client specifically asks me to do that.”

This philosophy is in evidence on the project Novelli recently completed for repeat-customer Shawn Harmon, owner of Fish Tails in Ocean City. The Harmons wanted a Key West feel to their 3,000-plus sq. ft. backyard, so Novelli began with a platform of EP Henry Devonstone pavers in Gaelic for their sandy, windswept quality and for the way they complement the 30,000-gallon free-form pool installed by Trond’s Pool Care in Berlin. The amazing pool features not only a kids’ wading pool but also a rainbow-stone-topped cocktail table for three at the south end in addition to a sumptuous 12-ft.-diameter hot tub at the north end that’s good for at least eight people. The pool’s coping as well as the hot tub’s capstones are all done in luxurious rainbow stone imported from India, with dapples of white coral accent stone throughout.

M&O Construction in West Ocean City, meanwhile, came in to do all the woodwork, which includes the fencing and gating, a pergola and, of course, the expansive 900 sq. ft. poolhouse, which was designed by Jack Mumford of Becker Morgan in Salisbury. The cedar-shake-and-Ipe-wood theme permeates the space with the balmy ambiance of a Caribbean resort.

The whole thing is presided over by a majestic 14-foot outdoor fireplace of Novelli’s design. It features Eldorado Bluff-stone Olive Grove tumbled ledge stone with double fireboxes
in addition to a hearth and double mantles made from rainbow stone. The upper mantle sports a hand-carved rainbow-stone Fish Tails logo recessed into the facing, so the Harmons and their guests will always be cognizant of what made their beautiful backyard getaway possible. The effect is complete with a set of chaise longues and umbrella deck seating for four to six. Amenities include wireless remote control for the exterior lights, jets, pumps, hot-tub waterfall, and a state-of-the-art sound system designed by Impact Home Theater in West Ocean City.
