It’s said that out of everything bad comes something good. This would certainly appear to be true in the case of one Ocean City resident, whom one would have thought would be in seriously dire straits following a water-pipe rupture that flooded and essentially destroyed his downtown Bayside condo in the winter of 2009. Fortunately, when it came time to pick up the pieces, he reached out to a trio of talented home improvement professionals who not only made the whole process bearable but who actually left him with a showplace of maritime beauty that would tempt even Captain Nemo to jump ship.
The first call was to Mitchell David of Captain Construction and Maintenance in Ocean City. David had done work for him before and had earned a position of trust and reputation for integrity. After the initial nightmare of clean-up, David proceeded to rewire the electrical, set up the lighting and mount the drywall. Then it was time to beautify. Following multiple coats of rich and bright nautical-yellow paint for the walls, attractive hardwood floors were laid throughout, with splashes of tasteful navy-blue area rugs with white interlocking rings designed to jump start the maritime feel.
Then it was on to the master bath, where David replaced all the trim work in addition to rehanging the shower door and mirrors, all of which sets off perfectly the 18”x18” natural-stone-style ceramic tile with aqua tones.
But for all the aesthetic enhancements that David brought to bear, his client was most pleased by the dexterity and diligence he displayed when working with the insurance companies and condo association. David achieved the most equitable settlement possible and paved the way for a smooth and quick reconstruction.
The groundwork having been laid, it was time to furnish and decorate – which also meant it was time to call Joe Kendall of Kendall Home Furnishings in West Ocean City.
“The customer was well aware of what he was going for with the space,” said Kendall, who should know what he’s talking about, considering this would be the third time he had been hired by this homeowner. “So, I really felt the most important role we could play was to advise and execute.
“We’d brought in a chaise that was navy fabric with white anchors,” Kendall continued, “and complemented it with two accent chairs that were also navy, but were embroidered with a multicolored pattern of signal flags. The living-room sofa, meanwhile, was red fabric with blue trim, just to mix things up and not to be too monochromatic. And because the client has a dog, we made sure all of the fabrics were no more than 30 percent cotton, so they’d be easy to maintain.”
Even easier to maintain is the Canadel dining-room table, whose treated solid-birch surface never needs polishing or waxing, making it ideal for anyone on the go.
The 1,850 sq. ft. condo’s theme was galvanized with some discreet finishing touches, such as shipping-basket endtables, some seaworthy artwork and models, Hunter Douglas TruView rear-tilt shutters with 4.5-inch veins, and the piece d’ resistance: a gorgeous leather-and-brass-stamped table with an old-world nautical-map tabletop that if it isn’t one-of-a-kind, certainly looks like it ought to be.
“It helps that Kendall’s deals with over 350 suppliers worldwide,” offered its proprietor, “which means that no matter what one’s décor philosophy or goals may be, we have access to the furnishings to accommodate them. That’s why I often say that we make journeys become realities.”
Ultimately, though, a man’s home is his castle, so you may rest assured that wherever the throne is, you’ll find the TV. Fittingly, when this particular king of the sea needed help with his personal media center, he turned to, who else, a god of the sea.
“I’ve known the client for years and have worked for him before, so when he called and said he needed my help, I didn’t waste any time,” said Greg Beck, owner of Poseidon Cabinetry & Millwork.
Beck rose to the occasion by first getting ahold of some top quality, all-natural cherry wood, then proceeding to create a one-of-a-kind, custom-built entertainment center that would be a source of pride for any man who owned it. It includes a swivel base in the main cabinet, a subwoofer compartment, head-unit compartment, multiple display compartments and a book tower. In its totality, it’s quite the functional showpiece, but it wouldn’t be the last contribution that Beck would make to the space.
“Later on, the client called me back because he wanted a custom bar built,” shared Beck, whose Berlin-based company has been in business for 12 years. “So I made him a matching mini dry bar with an upper cabinet, featuring a glass shelf, doors and bottom, so when the accent lighting is on, it filters down to the bar surface itself, which is a savoy-brown granite.” At seven-feet high, the unit spans 44 inches and has depths of 23 inches on the bottom and 16 inches on top.
At the end of the day, there is one seafaring man whose Bayside condo is now more than he ever thought it could be, thanks to the talents of three very special area craftsman and the fact that pipes sometimes burst.
