WEST INDIES STYLE... WITH A SECRET

Posted: 232 DAYS AGO | Comments: [10]
Column: Home and Garden
Tucked away in a secluded niche lies one of Ocean City’s best-kept residential
secrets… until now. There’s a brand new, four-story, Caribbean-inspired single family home that boasts the latest amenities of custom construction, adorned with the finest furnishings and accessories – but that’s not the secret. The house is a state-of-the-art gem that exudes West Indies vibes and features breathtaking views of the resort from its six exterior decks – but that’s not what’s been so hush-hush, either. It’s not even that this 2,800-square-foot property is on the market or that a full price sale comes with the BMW Roadster parked in the garage as a bonus. Nope. The secret is that this beautiful island getaway was designed, renovated and decorated by Bryan LeCompte – yes, the same Bryan LeCompte who owns Yard Designs, Inc. and is widely regarded as one of the Eastern Shore’s best landscapers.

No, Bryan is not giving up his day job – far from it. He’s actually strategically expanding another one of his companies, East Coast Restoration and Renovations, and he’s quite good at it.

“It’s not my primary job, for sure, but it is something I truly enjoy. This has been a great opportunity during a slower time to play with a hobby of mine,” Bryan said. “My passion is working outdoors, but I really like remodeling and design. It’s a lot of fun.”

A lot of fun (and style) also describes the company’s latest rehab effort on 2nd Street in Ocean City. The first level welcomes guests through a spacious and handsomely
designed foyer with steps leading to the second floor. Here, a warm and inviting dining area is perfectly complemented by an open living room accented with some of Bryan’s favorite furnishings and accessories in the home. The kitchen is also located on this level and is outfitted with cherry cabinetry, Galaxy Black granite (one of four exotic granites used throughout the home) and GE Profile stainless steel appliances. The high-tech audio equipment was installed by the multi-talented team of Ryan Goodwin and George Hires of
Impact Audio Video in West Ocean City. The system, which provides a host of listening options for residents and guests in every room of the house, is discretely contained in a closet. An elegantly appointed powder room is also on the second floor.

The third floor contains the two guest bedrooms (each with an inclusive bathroom and a deck offering panoramic views of the resort) and a spacious laundry room, while the top level plays host to the grand master suite with its vaulted ceiling, stunning bathroom with pebble floored shower, private deck and walk-in California Closet.

The 2-car attached garage is as luxurious as any other room of the home – complete with granite countertops, black custom cabinetry and 18-inch porcelain tile flooring. The icing on this property’s cake is also in the garage for the property’s new owner – a 6-cylinder, 1997 BMW Roadster convertible painted in metallic silver and accented with black leather interior. Bryan said the hotrod is in mint condition and has been driven for just 40,000 miles.

One question still comes to mind: How does one of the region’s leading landscaping specialists become so proficient at interior design? Bryan said his years of experience in exterior design provide him with the ability to select and stage the right combination of furniture and accessories inside a home.

“Imagine your own patio setting for a moment,” Bryan said. “Most people are not going to display the furniture, plantings and accessories like I would. My years of experience have
provided me with the ability to look at and understand colors, texture, furniture placement, accessory arrangement – just like I do outside properties.”

Bryan also personally selects all of the furnishings, artwork, accessories and paint colors used on each project. In the case of the 2nd Street property, he utilized pieces from Gatsby’s, Monkey’s Truck, Rooster’s Nest, Casual Designs, Fenwick Float-ors, Tulip, Bethany Resort Furnishings, Furnitureland and The Country House, just to name a few.

“There is some neat stuff in that house,” Bryan said. “It is a fun property. We took a shell of a house and created a cool, Caribbean weekend retreat.”

Vibrant paint colors such as Decisive Yellow (foyer), Osage Orange (living and dining rooms), Belize Blue and Gladiola Red (guest bedrooms), Jargon Jade (master suite) and Surfer Blue (garage) all serve to welcome and sooth residents and guests.

“I use elements of Caribbean life as inspiration. I love the West Indies look,” Bryan said. “These warm, rich colors helped to create the atmosphere I wanted. This is the hottest house in Ocean City with the coolest price.”

LeCompte incorporates a variety of inspirations into his design style, calling it ‘more eclectic,’ through elements of the Florida Keys, Mediterranean, Asian and Caribbean influences.

“These projects are relaxing for me,” Bryan said. “When I design properties, I love a lot of color. I love the rich, traditional colors that bring out the furniture combinations and make the rooms come alive.”

East Coast Restoration and Renovations has been purchasing and reviving properties for years in the greater Salisbury area, but began doing in so in Ocean City last year. Bryan and his partner, Thomas “TJ” Maloney, completed four restorations at the resort in 2009.

“TJ has a great eye,” Bryan said. “He and I complement one another very well on our projects.”

East Coast Restoration and Renovations rehab projects traditionally can take anywhere from 6 weeks to 3 months for Bryan and his team to complete. The firm is actively looking for new projects and work with new properties and older residences in need of remodeling.

“What I’m also proud of is the fact that no two properties are alike,” Bryan said. “We completed four properties last year and each one is unique. You will not find the traditional beach design in these properties. We’ve incorporated darker woods, heavy-duty rattans and bold color selections that combine to create Caribbean getaways in Ocean City.”
